Heavy Vehicle Licensing

The heavy vehicle licence course is conducted under  VicRoads Heavy Vehicle Assessment Manual (VRHVAM) guidelines. The Training and Assessment given in the courses will allow you to develop the skills and ability to drive the selected Heavy Vehicle and eventually gain a Heavy Vehicle Licence. The training is customised to suit the requirements and needs of the individual.

LIGHT RIGID (LR)  $1100.00

MEDIUM RIGID (MR)  $1100.00

HEAVY RIGID (HR AUTO)  $1350.00

HEAVY RIGID NON SYNCHROMESH $1700.00

HEAVY COMBINATION (HC)  $1800.00

MULTI COMBINATION (MC)  $1900.00

Requirements: 

  • You can apply for a LIGHT RIGID (LR) licence when you have held a car driver licence for 12 months.

  • You can apply for a MEDIUM RIGID (MR) licence when you have held a car driver licence for 12 months.

  • You can apply for a HEAVY RIGID (HR) licence when you have held a car driver licence for 24 months.

  • You can apply for a HEAVY COMBINATION (HC) licence when you have held a (MR) or (HR) driver licence or equivalent for one year or more. 

  • You can apply for a MULTI COMBINATION (MC) licence when you have held a (HR) or (HC) driver licence for at least one year. 

    • Vicroads mandates that if you hold a HR licence you MUST pass a Heavy Combination licence course before commencing Multi Combination training and licence assessment. If in doubt please contact Vicroads on 13 11 71 or visit a Vicroads Customer Service Centre.​

  • Meet VicRoads’ eligibility, medical and eyesight requirements.

  • If you are a NSW Licence Holder, the applicant must complete RMS Knowledge Test and follow RMS medical eligibility processes.

Course Content:  Theory, Road law and comprehensive driver training to prepare for all licence assessments

​

Assessment:

  • Theory Assessment – you must pass the theory assessment prior to undertaking practical assessment and it is advised that students book by appointment prior to the training day to undertake the theory and complete the pre-course paperwork

  • Off Road Skills Assessment - Vehicle Inspection, Cabin Inspection, Load Restraint and Reverse Test

  • On Road Driving Assessment

 

All training assessment is undertaken with accredited Integral Training Trainers.  Upon successful completion of your course, your licence will be processed online via the VicRoads portal. Please note there is a VicRoads licence change over fee payable directly to VicRoads by the student. If a paper CoC is required it will be issued by the trainer.​

*Medical Conditions:

  1. Are you currently suffering from, or have suffered from, any serious, permanent or long-term illness, disability, medical condition or injury that may affect your fitness to drive, such as eyesight or hearing problems, blackouts/dizziness, epilepsy/seizures, dementia, diabetes, sleep apnoea, head injury, stroke, high blood pressure, a cardiac, psychiatric or mental condition or a disorder that may deteriorate over time (eg multiple sclerosis)?

  2. Has there been any change to a medical condition that you previously notified to VicRoads?

  3. Are you taking any prescribed medicines (excluding antibiotics, contraceptives, inhalers or Hormone Replacement Therapy)?

If you have answered yes to any of the questions above you may be required to have the VicRoads medical form completed by your doctor and approved by VicRoads before undertaking the course. 

​

VicRoads criteria will not allow training on international licences (except NZ).

​

Course duration and course fee does not guarantee students will sit all of the assessments. To be eligible to test, students MUST first meet all VicRoads criteria. If criteria are NOT met students will not be able to undergo the test and will continue to train for the duration of the course. Additional costs will apply if students book subsequent training and/or testing.

Course fee and course duration DOES NOT guarantee a licence.

Course duration range from:

  • Half day - 4 hours

  • Full day - 7 hours

  • 1 & 1.2 day - 11 hours

  • 2 day - 14 hours
